Jump Off TV Debates

What is the Jump Off TV Debates?

The Jump Off TV Debates is a panel discussion show focused on the UK Black music industry and its adjacent culture. The format launched in August 2011 on the Jump Off TV UK YouTube channel, which was rebranded to AllTalkVideo in 2016.

The show featured round table discussions about current affairs within the ‘urban’ music industry in the UK and covered many key stories concerning the industry between 2011 and 2015. As such it documents much of the state of the growing London scene during this time period.

The debates feature a revolving cast of panel members and hosts, including DJ Snips, Chuckie Online, LaLa, TeeF, Poet, Jade Avia, Vicky Hope, Young Kye and Mim Shaikh. Guest panellists include personalities such as Claira Hermet, Manga St Hilare, Ms Banks, Mo Gilligan and Don Strapzy.

The format was altered and renamed a number of times and has previously been known as The Jump Off Friday UK Hip Hop Report Debates, Behind the Scene Debates and AllTalkVideo Debates.

The final episode was released in April 2017.

Jump Off TV Debates Format

General Debates

The Jump Off TV Debates evolved from its launch format to its eventual final presentation style between 2011 and 2017.

The bulk of recordings were conducted in a relaxed group setting with its debate panel sat in a room together talking about a specific topic with a chair (often also the producer and camera operator) to guide the conversation. In these video there are segments in which guests are individually removed from the group to elaborate on any points they brought up during the course of the main debate.

In later series the debates were conducted in environments such the dining section of a bowling alley and at a restaurant.

Best Of Debates

During ‘Best Of’ debates (eg. Best Music Video) the group all discuss the particular topic together and by process of elimination work towards naming an item from the shortlist of their collective favourite. Best Of content took place at the end of their 2011 and 2012 recordings, with the latter taking place in front of a live audience.

Special Debates

A handful of specialist debates took place in which a reduced panel was used for the discussions. This included a one-on-one debate between DJ Snips and Marvin Sparks about the origins of Grime and a conversation about internships with the author of a book about the topic.

Live Debates

In the final season of the show – under the rebranded AllTalkVideo – five live debates were recorded and broadcasted on YouTube.
